On hearing this, I instructed the End Officer to get a signal ready - "SI" meaning "Keep off and await further instructions" and my instructions were "Go away, all Europeans will be killed: Captain doing best in interests of owners, passengers and crew! Captain takes full responsi bi li ty". Semaphore or Morse to be
used. This was explained to the pirates, and they agreed.
No armed guard was asked for on departure from
Singapore.
All the ship's firearms were cleaned and inspected on
25th September.
I should like to put on record the excellent behaviour
under trying circumstances of all Officers and Engineer Officers, including the Doctor and Wireless Operator.
